Looking for the best smartphones under ₹20,000 in India? This is the band where AMOLED panels and optical image stabilisation finally appear — and where we have to correct one piece of advice from our own ₹15,000 guide.

In our ₹15,000 guide we told you to stretch to ₹19,000, because that’s where 8GB of RAM and a proper AMOLED panel begin. Having now gone through this band properly, that advice was half right — and the half that’s wrong is worth correcting.

AMOLED does arrive here. So does optical image stabilisation, which is the single biggest real-world camera upgrade in the entire budget market. But 8GB of RAM does not arrive as reliably as we implied — two of the best phones in this band still ship 4GB.

Here’s what ₹20,000 actually buys, and where the money genuinely goes.

Best smartphones under ₹20,000: the 60-second answer

• Fastest charging — iQOO Z11 Lite 44W: 6500mAh at 44W, roughly triple the charge rate of most rivals.
• Skip: anything still on a 720p panel at this price — and yes, several are.

The real ₹20,000 dividing line is OIS, not RAM

Optical image stabilisation physically moves the camera sensor or lens to counteract your hand shake. It is a mechanical component, it costs money, and it is absent from every phone in our ₹15,000 guide.

Two phones here have it: the Samsung Galaxy M17 (50MP OIS) and the Motorola G86 Power (50MP Sony OIS).

What it changes in practice:

• Low light. OIS lets the sensor hold the shutter open longer without blurring, so indoor and evening shots collect far more light. This is the difference between a usable dinner photo and a smeared one.
• Video. Handheld footage stops looking like handheld footage.
• Keeper rate. Fewer shots ruined by a slightly shaky hand.

A 50MP sensor without OIS and a 50MP sensor with OIS produce visibly different photographs the moment light drops. Megapixels are the number on the box; OIS is the number that matters.

And the panel finally becomes real

At ₹15,000 you get 720p almost universally. Here you can get:

• Motorola G86 Power — 6.7″ 1.5K pOLED. Higher than Full HD, on a plastic-OLED panel.
• Samsung Galaxy M17 — 6.7″ Super AMOLED, FHD+ (1080×2340), 90Hz.

Against a 720p LCD, an FHD+ AMOLED is roughly 1.5× the pixel density, with true blacks and far better outdoor contrast. That is the upgrade worth paying for between the two bands — more than RAM, more than the processor.

Two things the spec sheets are doing that you should know about

1. Vendor-quoted AnTuTu scores are not comparable

Both iQOO phones here run the same MediaTek Dimensity 6300. iQOO quotes the Z10 Lite at 433K+ AnTuTu and the Z11 Lite at 579K+.

Same chip. Same brand. A 34% gap.

Benchmark totals shift with RAM and storage speed, thermal headroom, OS version and which AnTuTu revision was used — and manufacturers pick favourable conditions. Both figures carry an asterisk in the listings for exactly this reason. Treat vendor-quoted AnTuTu as marketing, and compare the chip name instead.

2. “Up to 14GB Dynamic RAM” is still storage

The realme narzo 100 Lite advertises “up to 14GB Dynamic RAM”. As covered in our ₹15,000 guide, that is 4GB of physical RAM plus swap space carved out of storage. It stops apps being force-closed in the background. It does not make the phone faster, and the flash wear is real.

Read the first number only. 4GB is 4GB.

Why it wins: It is the only phone here that gets the three durable things right at once. A Super AMOLED FHD+ panel. 50MP with OIS. And Gorilla Glass Victus — genuinely tough glass, not the unspecified “toughened” panel most rivals use.

Then there is the software commitment: six generations of OS upgrades. Nothing else in this guide comes close, and it is the single strongest argument for buying this phone. A phone you can still update in 2032 is worth meaningfully more than one abandoned in 2028.

It also has a real 5MP ultrawide rather than the 2MP filler most budget phones use to claim a triple camera, and at 7.5mm it is the slimmest here.

Where it falls short: 4GB of RAM at ₹20,000 is the disappointment, and it is a real one — background apps will reload more than they should. 90Hz rather than 120Hz. The Exynos 1330 is efficient rather than fast. And a 2MP macro camera is, as always, decoration.

Buy it if: you keep phones a long time and take photos in imperfect light.
Skip it if: you multitask heavily — 4GB will frustrate you.

2. Motorola G86 Power — Best value

6.7″ 1.5K pOLED · 8GB/128GB · 50MP Sony with OIS · 6720mAh · 33W TurboPower

Why it wins: On paper this is the most complete phone in the guide, and it is roughly ₹2,000 cheaper than the Samsung. A 1.5K pOLED panel — sharper than Full HD. 8GB of real RAM, the only one here at this price. A 50MP Sony sensor with OIS. And a 6720mAh battery with 33W charging.

There is no obvious weak spec. That is rare below ₹20,000.

Where it falls short: Motorola’s Indian software support record is weaker than Samsung’s — expect fewer OS upgrades and slower security patches, which is precisely where the M17’s six-generation promise wins. Motorola also doesn’t publish an IP rating or glass specification here, and unstated is rarely flattering. Stock quantities on this listing have been thin.

Buy it if: you want maximum hardware now and replace phones every 2–3 years.
Skip it if: long-term updates matter more than specification.

3. realme narzo 100 Lite 5G — Best battery

6.8″ 144Hz, 900 nits, DC dimming · 7000mAh Titan battery · 6nm octa-core · 4GB + 64GB

Why it wins: 7000mAh — the largest battery in this guide and among the largest on sale in India. realme quotes 140 hours of music, 22 hours of WhatsApp and 11+ hours of gaming. Even discounted for optimism, that is genuinely multi-day use.

The 900-nit panel is also brighter than most here, and DC dimming reduces flicker at low brightness, which matters if screens give you headaches at night.

Where it falls short: 64GB of storage at ₹18,000 is tight — realistically 45GB usable. The 144Hz panel is 720p, not FHD+ — high refresh on a low-resolution screen, the same trade we flagged at ₹15,000. 4GB physical RAM, with the “14GB Dynamic” marketing noted above. No OIS.

Buy it if: battery life is the thing you actually care about.
Skip it if: you want a sharp screen or take photos in low light.

4. iQOO Z11 Lite 44W 5G — Fastest charging

Dimensity 6300 · 6500mAh · 44W FlashCharge · 50MP Sony main · OriginOS 6.0 · 2 years of Android updates · 4GB/128GB

Why it wins: 44W charging on a 6500mAh cell is roughly three times the rate of the 15W phones here. Combined with a large battery, charging stops being something you plan around — fifteen minutes gets you meaningfully through a day. It also uses a 50MP Sony sensor and 128GB of storage.

Where it falls short: iQOO doesn’t publish the panel resolution or type in this listing, which after everything above should make you assume the segment minimum. Only 2 years of Android updates — against Samsung’s six generations, that is a very different ownership horizon. 4GB RAM. And the 579K AnTuTu figure is the one discussed above; treat it as marketing.

Buy it if: charging speed is your priority.
Skip it if: you want a phone that lasts past two OS versions.

5. iQOO Z10 Lite 5G — Most durable

Dimensity 6300 · 6000mAh, 15W · 50MP Sony AI · IP64 + military-grade shock resistance · 4GB/128GB

Why it wins: IP64 plus military-grade shock resistance is unusual protection at ₹19,000. If your phone lives on building sites, in fields, or with a child, that combination is worth more than any spec bump.

Where it falls short: 15W charging on a 6000mAh cell means a long wait — the Z11 Lite at the same brand charges three times faster for ₹1,000 more. And the 433K AnTuTu figure for the same chip the Z11 Lite calls 579K is the clearest illustration of why those numbers can’t be compared.

6 & 7. The alternatives, and one to skip

The Samsung Galaxy F06 5G at around ₹16,899 gives you 6GB of real RAM and 128GB with Samsung’s software support, for ₹3,000 less than the M17. What you give up is the AMOLED panel — this is HD+ — and OIS. If RAM matters more than camera and screen, it’s a rational choice.

The realme P4 Lite 5G is the one I’d steer past. realme publishes full specs here, and they tell the story: 720×1570 IPS LCD at ~254 PPI, and a 13MP main camera — not 50MP — with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, for ₹16,799.

The 144Hz refresh and 900-nit brightness are real, but they’re wrapped around a low-resolution panel and a modest camera. At ₹1,000 more the Motorola G86 Power gives you a 1.5K pOLED, 8GB of RAM and a 50MP Sony sensor with OIS. That comparison isn’t close.

Credit to realme for publishing the full specification, though. Most brands in this band don’t, and that’s usually why.

Correcting ourselves: was “stretch to ₹19,000” right?

Partly. Here is the honest scorecard against what we said in the ₹15,000 guide:

• “FHD+ AMOLED” — correct. The Samsung M17 delivers Super AMOLED FHD+, and the Motorola goes further with 1.5K pOLED. This is a genuine, visible upgrade.
• “8GB of real RAM” — only partly. The Motorola has it. Our best overall pick, and both iQOOs, still ship 4GB at ₹19,000–20,000. We implied it was standard here. It isn’t.
• “45W-plus charging” — partly. The iQOO Z11 Lite hits 44W. Most of the band is still 15–33W.
• What we undersold — OIS. We didn’t mention it, and it’s the most consequential difference between the two bands.

So the upgrade is real, but buy it for the screen, the camera stabilisation and the software support — not for the RAM, which you still have to check model by model.

Is 4GB RAM acceptable at ₹20,000?

It’s disappointing but survivable if the software is light — Samsung’s One UI on the M17 manages it better than most. If you keep many apps open, the Motorola’s 8GB is the only real answer in this guide.
