As the US ban came into force after September, making it impossible to build its own chips, a new report emerged that Huawei will soon announce a smartphone with MediaTek’s Dimensity chipset lineup. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is lobbying for a business permit to allow a partnership with Huawei.
The report claims that Huawei was able to secure a large inventory of Dimensity chipsets from MediaTek just before September, as evidenced by chipmakers’ quarterly results. Both revenue and net income increased by almost 45% and 94% year-on-year, respectively. MediaTek has confirmed that this is because its Dimensity chipset has gained a significant portion of its market share as 5G emerges.

This isn’t the first time Huawei has used MediaTek, but it’s definitely the first time we’ve seen a high-end and mid-range Huawei phone with a Taiwanese manufacturer’s SoC.
