Google’s Project Treble has been around since 2017 with the goal of accelerating Android updates by modularizing the core Android OS framework from OEM skin customization. Currently, Google and Qualcomm are working together to help Snapdragon-powered phones support up to four Android OS versions (release + three OS updates) and four years of security updates.

Starting with the new Snapdragon 888 platform, Project Treble adds support for OS and security updates, a major change in software update policy. Samsung announced in August that its Note 20 lineup will include three major Android OS updates. Google’s own Pixel line leads all Android phones with three years of OS updates and security patches.
Google claims that all Qualcomm chipsets coming out on devices running Android 11 will benefit from extended software support. No other chipset makers other than Qualcomm have been mentioned yet. It also gained insight into Android 10 adoption rates, revealing 667 million active users, 82% of whom received direct updates (OTAs) on their devices.
