One-plus warmed the crowd a few weeks ago by announcing a $ 150 million partnership with legendary camera maker Hasselblad for three years. The Hasselblad camera was flying towards the moon on Apollo 11, but is now equipped with the latest Snapdragon 888 flagship.
OnePlus 9 Pro introduces Fluid Display 2.0 and Warp Charge 50 wireless charging. The main camera is also equipped with a custom Sony IMX789 image sensor. Vanilla models have their own upgrades.
OnePlus 9 Pro
A key feature of this generation is the Hasselblad-backed camera, with the best version of the OnePlus 9 Pro. Swedish camera makers have focused on improving the color science of their two phones as the first workaround in the smartphone segment.
The main camera uses the IMX789 sensor jointly developed with Sony. This is a large 1 / 1.43 inch sensor with 1.12 µm pixels and 48MP resolution. It features the latest camera technologies such as dual native ISO, digital overlap HDR (DOL-HDR) and 2×2 on-chip lens (OCL). And of course, OIS.
This sensor can generate 12-bit RAW images. The dedicated Hasselblad Pro mode in the camera app helps you fine-tune your photos for a natural look and feel. The main sensor can record 8K video at 30fps or 4K at 120fps. It is equipped with a 2MP black-and-white camera to support monochrome shooting with the main camera.
The ultra-wide-angle camera boasts another Sony sensor, the 50MP IMX766. The 1 / 1.56 inch sensor is placed behind the free-form lens, reducing distortion near the edges to 1% (compared to 10-20% of regular lenses). This camera is equipped with an auto-focus system that allows you to take macro pictures at a distance of only 4 cm.
This phone skips the periscope and is equipped with a standard telephoto lens instead. It offers 3.3x optics (77 mm) and is slightly closer to action than the 8Pro’s 3x lens. The 8MP sensor in it has 1.0 µm pixels and OIS.
The new Fluid Display 2.0 debuts with the OnePlus 9 Pro. This is a 6.7 inch LTPO panel that promises up to 50% power savings in common use. This efficiency comes from the ability to adjust the refresh rate from the top 120Hz (for smooth UI) to 1Hz (used when reading text or displaying Always On Display). The display can also adapt to that content. For example, you can run at 24Hz for movies and 90Hz for Fortnite.
The 1440p + display is built using E4 luminescent material and native 10-bit color depth. There are ambient light sensors on the front and back, which can automatically adjust the color temperature. All of these got A + scores from Display-mate. The display is also very bright, with a peak of 1,300 nits.
The 120Hz refresh rate is supported by the 240Hz touch sampling rate, which improves response time during games. Speaking of games, let’s take a look at chipsets.
The OnePlus 9 Pro, of course, comes with a Snapdragon 888 and is paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The new CoolPlay setup is based on an 8T cooling solution, but with a larger vapor chamber, thicker graphite sheet, and more copper foil, it has a better ability to dissipate heat.
The phone comes standard with 8GB of RAM, but you can upgrade to 12GB. The basic storage is 128GB and there is a 256GB option. Check the bottom of this article for a price list.
In addition to the new display, the phone also introduces the Warp Charge 50 Wireless. The new wireless charger, sold separately, has two coils that allow you to charge the 9 Pro vertically or horizontally (for example, when watching a movie). A 1-100% full charge only takes 43 minutes.
But if you’re really in a hurry, you can use the Warp Charge 65T wired charger that came with your phone. Twice as fast as an 8 Pro charger. 1-100% takes 29 minutes, but the 8 Pro 30W charger takes 50% in that time. You can also use it to charge other gadgets that support SB Power Delivery (laptops, power banks, Nintendo Switch, etc.) (PPS is supported).
Finally, let’s talk a little bit about phone hardware. It has an aluminum frame sandwiched between two glass plates. The front is a curved pane of Gorilla Glass, and the back has several options. The new hero color is pine green with a soft two-layer matte finish. Morning Mist shows a gradation from silver to black, and Stella Black has a matte finish reminiscent of the trademark sandstone look. The dustproof and waterproof performance of the main body is IP68.
One-plus 9 gets a parback version of the Hasselblad camera. The main module will switch to the old IMX689 sensor. This is a 1 / 1.43 inch 48MP sensor with a 2×2 on-chip lens, dual native ISO and 12-bit RAW output. DOL-HDR has been replaced by traditional HDR.
The OIS is gone and the camera maintains 8K 30 fps mode, but loses 4K 120 fps mode (4K 60 fps is the best). Hasselblad Pro mode is still included, despite sensor changes.
Fortunately, the 50MP ultra-wide camera is the same. With the same IMX766 sensor, you can take macro pictures at 4 cm without a lens. 2MP black-and-white cameras are still in place, but the biggest loss in the transition from professional to vanilla is the lack of a telephoto camera.
Vanilla OnePlus 9 has a first generation Fluid Display. That is, it has a 120Hz refresh mode, but it is not adaptable. This is a flat 6.55 inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1080p or higher, as seen on the 8T. However, it is HDR10 + certified and has the highest brightness of 1,100 knits, so it got an A + score from DisplayMate.
This phone is powered by the Snapdragon 888 chip-set with the new Cool-play cooling system. The phone is equipped with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage with the same configuration options (8 / 128GB and 12 / 256GB).
The vanilla model also comes with a 4,500mAh battery and a wired warp charge of 65T (1-100% in 29 minutes). It only supports 15W Qi charging, but is the first non-Pro model in the family with wireless charging (regionally dependent). Please note that only the North American and European versions have this.
Both OnePlus 9 models feature dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and an upgraded tactile feedback motor. Both models use the same selfie camera – 16 MP sensor (IMX471, 1.0 µm), fixed focus f / 2.4 lens.
OnePlus 9 features a fiberglass reinforced polymer frame with a new “metallization” process that gives it a glossy look. Available in three colors: Winter Mist (subtle purple gradation), Arctic Sky (matt blue), and Astral Black (matte film underneath the back of shiny glass).
