WHY SHOULD YOU KEEP YOUR PROFILE SECURE ?
In recent times, technology has advanced in various fields. Social networking sites can track your posts, the posts you have liked, and the ads you have looked into. This enables them to keep a track of your browser history and shows you content that you may like. To prevent this invasion of privacy, we must keep our profiles secure.
But how does one do that?
Facebook the social media giant had recently launched a feature that allows its users in India to lock their profile so that only people from their friend’s list could view their photos and posts. This new feature called ‘Facebook profile lock’ protects people’s privacy from strangers and hackers on social media sites.
The ability to lock the profile is specially designed for women who want more control over their Facebook experience. “We are deeply aware of the concerns people in India, particularly women, have about protecting their online profile. Today, we are announcing a new feature which, in one easy step, will give people a lot more control, ensure their privacy and keep them safe and secure online,” Ankhi Das, Public Policy Director, Facebook India, said in a statement.
Once the profile is locked, non-friends cannot :
- zoom into your profile
- share your profile
- download your profile
- cannot see photos and posts of your locked account.
STEPS TO LOCK YOUR FACEBOOK PROFILE.
Step 1: Download Facebook on your device
Step 2: Go to your profile and tap on the ‘More’ option under your Profile Photo.
Step 3: Now, click on the ‘Lock Profile’ option from the list of available options.
Step 4: Now, click on the ‘Lock Your Profile’ option to confirm.
However, this new privacy feature does come with a tradeoff, a person who has locked their Facebook profile will no longer be able to make public posts. If they wish to still want to keep their posts public then they will have to disable the profile lock feature.
HOW KEEPING A FB PROFILE CAN IMPACT YOUR PRIVACY?
Facebook collects a lot of data about you when you’re not even on Facebook. Hundreds of thousands of apps, websites, and other services send the company reams of information about what you’re doing on other parts of the internet—and sometimes even what you’re up to in the real world. It modifies ads displayed on your screen according to your previous search history. It can also keep a track of your location.
Facebook can impact your privacy in many ways, but how you use your account can determine the levels of privacy invasion the application could do. Checking your privacy settings, rejecting requests from unknown people, clearing your browser history, and downloading VPNs to secure your network can help keep your Facebook account remain safe and secure.
IS FACEBOOK SAFE FOR YOU ?

Facebook offers its users options to customize their privacy settings, but this is not enough. In order to keep our accounts safe from hackers, there are certain measures that we need to carry out while using Facebook.

- Think before you post.
- Adjust your privacy settings.
- Only accept friend requests from people you know.
- Report posts or content that doesn’t adhere to social media guidelines.
- It is important you have an antivirus and anti-spyware program installed on your computer which helps prevent viruses and spyware infections, greatly reducing the chances of your information and passwords being stolen.
